| Summary: | Birdwatching and ecotourism in Itamaracá (PE): an instrument to promote the sustainabledevelopment. Birdwatching is a nature-related activity founded upon bird collections. This paperaims at making a list of bird species in several environments situated on the Island of Itamaracá, Stateof Pernambuco, Brazil. Moreover, we intend to detect possible threats to bird species survivorship, inorder to verify the potential to develop a sustainable tourism, under a perspective in which thebirdwatching (ecotourism) can become an instrument to promote the sustainable development. Werecorded 184 bird species including four endangered species and 22 migratory and marine birds.The lack of UCs regulation, the lack of sanitation and the use of the beaches without control composesome of indicators of the absence of sustainability, regarding touristic activities on the Island.Nevertheless, Itamaracá is a potential place for birdwatching, which in turn can become a realinstrument of sustainable tourism to promote the development of local people. |
