| description | This thesis studies the possibility of an absolute decoupling between energy consumption and economic growth. It consists of four chapters. Chapter 1 critically reviews the main methods used to assess the existence of absolute decoupling and concludes that it is necessary to study the role played by energy in the economic growth process. Chapters 2 and 3 are therefore devoted to the analysis of growth theories. Chapter 2 deals with the neoclassical framework. It examines the proposal of a part of ecological economics to integrate the laws of thermodynamics into aggregate production functions. Chapter 3 focuses on the neo-physiocratic and classical schools of thought (especially Marxism). It assesses the ability of their respective theories of value (energy-value and labor-value) to correctly articulate the physical and monetary dimensions of production. On this basis, it compares the way in which these two models of growth reveal energy constraints. Finally, Chapter 4 proposes an empirical exploration of the classical framework. Using panel data for the period 1995-2019, it verifies the existence of a profit rate channel by testing the significance of changes in the relative price of energy on the profit rate. This econometric work is completed by a discussion of post-Keynesian work on the relationship between profit and accumulation. |
