description In the genesis of Flaubert's novels, the scénarios bear some eloquent traces of the care the writer devotes to the organization of the order of the narrative discourse, especially with regard to the treatment of the analepses. The manuscripts of his novels, especially those of Madame Bovary, Trois Contes and Bouvard et Pécuchet, show the frequent use of the term antécedents, which the writer usually uses to signal the need to develop some information about the past of his characters. Often, the term is found in meta-genetic statements by which Flaubert reflects on the management of the avant-texte and specifies the place and function assigned to an analepsis or the type of discourse to use.
