| Summary: | Language software programs often use waveforms to reinforce their credibility as well as to try and help learners to make a link between their oral production and the examples they are asked to imitate, even though they often do not know how to start improving their performance. Are such waveforms (usually oscillograms) able to help in any way? As the importance of phonetics and the specific nature of aural activities are now generally acknowledged, it is worthwhile formulating this question, even if many would reject the validity of the waveforms on the grounds that they do not provide sufficient information. It might also be useful to determine whether the differences in the choice of graphs used in recently published software constitute a change for the better. |
