Summary:Abstract Wild turkey management in California consists of releasing wild‐trapped turkeys and conducting a fall and spring turkey hunting season. Three varieties of turkeys, totaling 1,287, have been released. The estimated population in 1973 was 2,310 Rio Grande turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia), 5,990 California hybrid turkeys, and 650 Merriam's turkeys (M.g. merriami). The annual turkey harvest has increased from 29 in 1968 to approximately 2,000 in 1973. The 1974‐75 fall and spring seasons will be 46 days with a bag limit of four turkeys. Thirty‐five counties will be open for the spring hunt.
