| Summary: | Since the establishment of the Greek state, French has dominated education as the language of prestige in various sectors. However, in the mid-twentieth century, Anglo-American influence propelled English to the forefront of communication, education and business. Greece's entry into the European Economic Community led to the incorporation of German into the curriculum as well. In line with the European language policies, a multilingual approach was adopted, guaranteeing the right to learn three Community languages. Nevertheless, the current education system gives priority to the main European languages, restricting the choice of learners. In this perspective, a study was carried out in Greek state schools, questioning pupils about their backgrounds, preferences and experiences of learning foreign languages in school or extra-curricular context. |
