| Summary: | The south of Madagascar is facing an intensification of climatic crises, accentuating the vulnerability of local populations. Adopting a methodology that combines qualitative and quantitative analysis, this article analyzes the diversity of social protection mechanisms used by south Madagascar populations for coping with climate shocks. The results underline the inadequacy of existing social protection mechanisms (formal, semi-formal and informal). Faced with the limitations of informal mechanisms, the resources provided by formal social protection schemes are decisive, but they remain limited and projects insufficiently adapted to local contexts. Decapitalization, nutritional insecurity and the reinforcement of relations of dependence are thus putting a lasting strain on the ability of local populations to cope. The article concludes with a discussion of the urgent need to devise new social protection schemes adapted to the two-fold complexity of local social protection arrangements and the socio-economic consequences. |
