Description
Summary:The construction industry is facing increasing challenges in innovation, which is crucial for its sustainable development. Digital transformation has emerged as a potential solution to enhance innovation in this sector. Listed construction companies from 2010–2023 are selected as research subjects, and a two-way fixed effects model is used to quantitatively examine the impact of digital transformation on innovation in the construction industry. The findings revealed the implementation of digital transformation contributed to enhancing the innovation levels of enterprises. The analysis of influencing channels indicated that digital transformation improved innovation through alleviating financing constraints, upgrading human capital, and promoting knowledge spillovers. Heterogeneity analysis showed that the effect of digital transformation on innovation was more pronounced in enterprises led by CEOs with a background in R&D, state-owned enterprises, and those in high-tech industries. Further analysis demonstrated while digital transformation enhanced innovation efficiency, it also ensured the quality of innovation. The findings of this study provide data support for policymakers to formulate policies that encourage digital transformation; indicate specific paths for industry practitioners to enhance the efficiency and quality of innovation through digitization; and provide researchers with a theoretical basis for further exploring the impact mechanisms of digital transformation, thereby collectively promoting high-quality development in the construction industry.
