description | Huge demographic and land tenure pressures Brazil's two metropolis: São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. However, the growth of these two metropolis has been steadily declining for half a century. It is now much lower than national growth. The methodology used consists in reconstructing the entire urban hierarchy of the country, starting from a strictly morphological definition of the urban agglomerations. This approach allows to verify that there is indeed an “attractor” of demographic size which is currently around 500 000 inhabitants. It also highlights the role of territorial administrative and political functions, notably when the cities are a state capital. |
