description | It is often said that heritage-making and urban planning are two different forms of public action, mobilizing very different conceptions of time and space. An analysis of UNESCO's heritage policies, and more specifically of the registration and monitoring of three World Heritage properties (in Athens, Brasilia and Edinburgh), helps to nuance this view. This article shows that, in these contexts, the imaginations of time and space that have guided heritage and urban planning together are rooted in different registers, expressing different ways of thinking about the past, present and future, as well as about heritage-objects, historic districts and cities as a whole. |
