| Summary: | We present to you the next issue of the periodical "Studia z Teorii Wychowania" published by the Christian Academy of Theology in Warsaw. The leading theme of the publication is the question of adulthood in a different sense of this capacious term. Adulthood has a biological dimension related to the anatomical and physiological consequences of development, and then we are talking not about growing up but about maturation. It is the concept of maturity that refers to the turning point of adulthood that sharply separates childhood from its important activity: play and the period of adulthood, which has two important characteristics: close relationships with a partner, usually of the opposite sex, and realization in the sphere of work and profession. Both these periods of childhood and adulthood are formally separated by the age of majority, but the aforementioned age rarely means adulthood. Erik Erikson introduces here a period separating them, the so-called "moratorium". The biological (maturation) and social (adolescence) dimension is also treated as a whole as adolescence.Different cultures define adulthood differently. In the occident culture, we tend to emphasize such features of adulthood as: independence, self-control, social stabilization, responsibility, seriousness, objectivity, endurance, tact, consistency in action or loyalty. It also points to the mental competences of a person distinguished by the mature, appropriate adult ability to think abstractly, to adhere to an internalized code of ethics, to develop mature interpersonal relations, to strive for objectivity in assessing oneself and other people, or understanding the essence of who a human being is.By its very nature, the following volume does not exhaust all aspects of the issue of adulthood, but highlights some of them and deepens and understanding of this, most contextual notion. |
