Description
Summary:The paper examines the frescoes in the churches of the Kumanovo area in today’s North Macedonia in the first quarter of the seventeenth century. At that time, several workshops operated in this region, and they belonged to one of two traditions: one group was influenced by contemporaneous Serbian art and the other by the painters of Kastoria. In their painting styles, these monuments fall into one of three groups: churches frescoed by Kastorian ateliers, those painted by artists who pursued the “patriarchal” style, and those decorated by local zographoi. There had been no mutual influence between these traditions, suggesting the complexity of the interactions between old and new artistic ties, which emerged after the incorporation of the Metropolis of Skopje into the restored Patriarchate of Peć.
