description This essay offers the first overview of the circulation of Italian professors of law teaching beyond the national borders. In particular, it provides an overview of the professional and personal careers of Italian law professors involved in academic mobility abroad from the end of the nineteenth century until the advent of the Republic in the mid-twentieth century. The reasons for the different types of mobility varied over time and geographical areas, depending on the individual scholar, as did the content of the teaching. In addition to free academic mobility, there was also the forced mobility of exiles. After 1938, as a result of racial persecution, Jewish teachers went into exile, fuelling Italian education outside national borders and contributing to the creation and circulation of legal knowledge.
