description This study attempts to observe and analyse the accommodation strategies developed by speakers of American English in interaction. It aims at accounting for the use of this complex structure syntactically-speaking, combining both interrogation with negation, and analysing its semantic/pragmatic contribution to the strategies pursued by speakers, especially their accommodation strategies. To do so, the strategic adjustments are examined in the light of the conversational context, the points of view expressed by the speakers and the objectives they would like to reach. Both the Speech-Act theory and the Pragma-Dialectical Approach not only shed light on the relevance of the use of negative interrogative clauses in contexts of disagreement but also help us understand how complex interpersonal relations develop when speakers want to reach an agreement by sharing points of view.
