| Summary: | At the global level the competency based approach (CBA) is today the pedagogical approach which underlies most educational reforms. Originating in the professional and vocational world, this approach found defenders in the academic world as well as among decision-makers.In Mexico, since the 1980s, the educational system has been modified on the basis of an operational grid informed by the CBA. When PAN, the liberal party, got elected in 2000, changes in national policy carried out and strengthened this approach. However, although the CBA is being promoted by the international community and the Mexican government has adopted it, several actors question its relevance. In particular, there is resistance within the teachers’ union. The CNTE, the dissident movement within the union, proposed an alternative program which, however, has been implemented in relatively few schools. This resistance invites reconsideration of the success of the approach, its seemingly obvious nature, and even its now hegemonic position, which would otherwise make it easy to forget that one ought perhaps to question the universality of its effectiveness or, at least, to consider the opposition that the approach evokes. |
