Description
Summary:After a brief survey of the works devoted to the reception of the Pastor Fido in seventeenth-century France, this article proposes to analyse the translations and the influence of Guarini’s work at different levels — the position of the translators as authors, the status of Guarinian lyrism in the constitution of expressive units from the work, the evaluation of the discussion about the « morality » of the play in the constitution of a « classical » doctrine. Finally, this article suggests a way of analysing the reception of the play not only in terms of the history of the text proper, but also in terms of cultural history.
