This was made possible due to a private real estate company supported by the prime minister, reflecting the power relations between actors in the city. Following its imposition as part of a modernist “tabula rasa” development in the 1920s, and after having triggered much academic debate in the 1990s, this legacy has since become an urban heritage landmark among other Middle Eastern cities and for a large part of the Lebanese population. |
