| Summary: | This paper investigates the interpenetration of Hispanic and Anglo worlds in Northern American cities and focuses on the rise of Hispanic neighborhoods (or Barrios) that resulted from massive waves of Hispanic immigration. It first examines the would-be latinization of the American population in order to highlight its very diverse components, its historic and recent causes, as well as its relationships to the city. It then shows that the Barrio was constructed as a research object for the social sciences only recently. Then it questions the model that emerged from researchers’ theoretical attempts and shows the great variety of Barrios that characterize American cities today. It finally argues that the Barrio is not a fixed spatial form and that the dynamics of Hispanic groups in several cities question the accuracy of the Barrio model to understand the city of tomorrow. |
