Interest and academic research on psychedelics and psychedelic-assisted therapy in the treatment of psychiatric disorders
has increased dramatically in the past two decades. In many ways, psychedelics represent a new therapeutic paradigm in the
context of medicine. A key feature of psychedelics is their ability to reliably induce an altered experiential state, which is
often described as mystical-like, self-transcending and meaningful, while also often experienced as challenging and anxietyprovoking.
The subjective quality and content of the psychedelic experience has been consistently linked to their therapeutic
effects. Here we review current understanding of the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of psychedelics, as well as
evidence of psychedelic-assisted therapy in the treatment of psychiatric conditions. |
