| Summary: | Abstract The Indian textile industry is a significant part of the cultural heritage of this nation. It has contributed enormously to the history of textile industry development globally from time immemorial. Its crucial contribution, appreciation, and documentation of buildings as well as other tangible and intangible components have long been lacking in academia and industry. This industry has been notably overlooked at the local, national, and international levels in the past and has not been explored thematically, holistically, or comprehensively to date. Demolition seems to be the only solution for these mills without any recognition of their historical, architectural, and scientific value, significance, and potential for reuse. This is also probably due to the absence of deeper scholarship on the development of spaces of production and its building typology, recognition as important industrial heritage, with no listing, inventory system, and legal protection guidelines in India. Awareness of industrial heritage in India is mainly absent. Thus, further scholarly research needed to provide a more explorative and comprehensive listing and inventory system, as well as a broader understanding of the various aspects and extent of Indian textile heritage. This study aims to understand, prepare and design inventory systems for the mapping of Indian textile industrial heritage. Specifically, this study examines the need for listing and developing a two-tier inventory system for the mapping of Indian textile industrial heritage. This research lays the foundation for the identification, recognition, protection, and conservation of Indian textile industrial heritage for present and future generations. |
