description Handwritten notes in a block, as well as some lose pages that come along with the process of the development of Manuel Puig’s first novel appear as intimate writing. We can read in them traces of the transformation of autobiographical material into fiction. In Betrayed by Rita Hayworth, a bildungsroman, the question becomes more interesting, because it is Puig’s first publication ; in order words, he becomes author with it. But this novel hasn’t got a narrator. Manuscript notes show the backstage of conflicts of enunciation during the work in process : it is an archaeology of voices that becomes sometimes closer to an enquiry than to a construction based on invention. Much more than in his following books, in this novel the author becomes an agent of the epistemological mutation of his own history.
