description This article aims to analyze the tactics of New York based publisher Semiotext(e), and, by way of comparison, those of more institutional publishers, in order to clarify the function of the book format and of its communication protocols in the North American diffusion of the so-called French Theory phenomenon. In addition to better known factors such as the crisis in the field of literature in the American academy or the transatlantic intellectual axis, it is the role of the specific dynamics of the book form (support-livre), with its complementary components (format, peritext, modes of classification and presentational procedures) and of its historical predecessors, which allow us to see the success of recent French theorists — from Foucault to Deleuze and Derrida — as a perfect example of cultural transfer, in the sense of the diversion of both a discourse and its methods of transmission.
