description The international practice of organization of cargo transportation by inland waterways within the city has been analysed. The ways of including inland water transport into the city logistics schemes of cargo delivery in European countries have been described. The key success factors of such projects and the role of local public authorities in their implementation have been defined. Attempts at effective using of water transport as a remedy for traffic congestion in Russian riverside cities have been complemented by the progressive experience of the European Union leading countries.
