| description | In this article, my purpose is to study Polybius’ use of historical examples. After reminding of the main elements of the author’s life, work and reception, I will briefly expose the rhetorical theories about example. Then I will show how Polybius uses historical examples through the Histories from a linguistic and textual analyses of a large sample based on the remaining parts of the first eighteen books. Lastly, in the third and latest step, I will compare my results to the Aristotle and Quintilian’s theoretical views. Thanks to this study, historical examples can be linked to inartificial proof and the status of the historical proof is questioned. |
