| Summary: | To marry an indigenous woman is like marrying a whole community: new feminine perspectives in a town of Upper Rio Negro. Among the patrilineal and virilocal indigenous communities of the Uaupés river, the « displaced » position of women is an essential constituent of female social experience, while male experience is centred on the notion of « belonging ». This article aims to describe and analyze changes in the position of women when they move to the city of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, the main urban center in the region. By focusing especially on those women who marry Whites in an urban context, we discuss the relationship between the high status they acquire as owners and donors of goods, the transformations in the policy of gender, and the emergence of new female subjectivities in the city. |
