| Summary: | More than ever, primatology involves multidisciplinary approaches, using ethology, medicine and conservation biology researches. At a time when more and more primate species are endangered, it appears crucial to approach their social and cognitive behavior, their natural population dynamics and their ecology, especially by means of transversal studies, in order to optimize animal conservation actions. Communication, social cognition or metacognition, have been the subject of increasingly integrated research work in primatology. First, in a perspective of fundamental research primarily aimed at a better understanding of the subjective world of our closest relatives, then for purposes of animal-welfare and conservation of captive individuals. The scientific disciplines such as cognitive psychology, ethology and neurosciences work together to better understand the primates. In addition, the successful collaborations between complementary areas, such as biology and conservation, are also involved in the conservation effort of primates on a global scale. Due to many technological innovations and the reduced influence of the experimenters on animals, the subjective, the emotional and the mental world of primates is now better understood, through the prism of multidisciplinary approaches which is in line with a more efficient harmonization of the discipline-specific concepts. However, the representation of primates is sometimes interpreted wrongly in the media, particularly with regard to their behavioral aspects. This raises the question of new forms of scientific mediation aim to enlighten more accurately public opinion. To ensure the respect of the legal status of primates and the effectiveness of long-term conservation strategies, the researches should be directly based on ecological and multidisciplinary approaches, even though scientific works should also take into consideration the induced echoes across our societies. |
