description Foundation: vasomotor syndrome is the most frequent clinical manifestation of the menopausal transition; evidence shows its association with risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Objective: determine the association between the intensity of vasomotor syndrome and risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out on 332 women who attended the climacteric and menopause clinic of the 19 de Abril University Polyclinic of the Plaza de la Revolución municipality during the period from 2018 to 2020. The variables studied were: the intensity of the syndrome vasomotor, through the Pérez Piñeiro Cuban scale and risk factors for cardiovascular disease: overweight and obesity, abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes mellitus type 2, hypercholesterolemia and sedentary lifestyle.
Results: 66.2 % of patients presented vasomotor symptoms with a predominance of moderate symptoms. The predominant risk factor for cardiovascular disease was sedentary lifestyle with 77.4 %, followed by excess weight (overweight and obesity) with 64.2 %, the greatest association was found with hypercholesterolemia.
Conclusions: vasomotor symptoms were associated with risk factors for cardiovascular disease. There was a clear increasing trend; the greater the number of risk factors, the more frequent the presence of moderate and very bothersome vasomotor syndrome.
