Summary:This article analyzes the social, intellectual and political career of the professor and senator Cristovam Buarque. It aims to demonstrate that acquiring a specific skill in the economic field and the accumulation of intellectual and interpersonal assets in France were decisive in driving him into high-flying national politics. This character’s path shows the weight of intellectual and cultural resources and, in this case, the importance of one’s titles and network built abroad, in the making of a politician in contemporary Brazil.
