description The tools used as the basis for the experiment on independent higher education quality assessment, conducted by the Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science of the Russian Federation have been analysed. The developed set of indicators for students’ knowledge assessment and quality of academic teaching staff are described. The results of the participation of HEIs in the fourth stage of the experiment on independent assessment of the quality of higher education are presented, including typification of higher education institutions, obtained by using cluster analysis.
