Description
Summary:Despite a forgery of the seal accompanying the original document, the text of the Bénezet Vita lyonnaise is generally considered to be an authentic letter from the brothers of the bridge at the first Council of Lyon. Up until now, this text has mainly been used by historians from Avignon discussing the Avignon bridge or its founder, with no connection to the Lyon context of its writing. However, by comparing this document with Lyon archives, new observations can be made that both exclude the Avignon brothers from the composition of this document and, more importantly, raise significant problems of dates and internal coherence. These elements then suggest a forgery from the late Middle Ages or the early Renaissance to provide a history for the Lyon bridge when Lyon’s bourgeois rediscover the history of their city.
