| Summary: | The research presented in this article concerns different regions in Cameroon and Burkina Faso. The apparent diversity of the areas masks a situation of total convergence concerning the central role of the tree in the landscape. The tree enriches the soil, slows down erosion due to run-off water and gives shade. It also provides fuel for heating, cooking and light, and is a source of medicinal products. In addition, the tree occupies an important place in the imagination of local populations and plays an essential role in agriculture. For all of these reasons the study of the relationship to the tree can help gain a better understanding of places and social interactions. This is the objective of this research which shows that the tree is much more than simply a part of the landscape and everyday life : it provides deep insights into the history of regions and their geographical configurations. |
