| Summary: | This paper presents feedback from fieldworks in the form of observations and questions relating to the appropriation of land space and air space by kites in Japan. Kites are intrinsically linked to the environment in which they fly and therefore land space, air space, and kites influence one another according to how kite flying is practised. We will discuss several issues, namely the influence of kite festivals on environmental management in the long term (the creation or maintenance of an adequate environment on the ground and in the air over the years) and in the short term (the transformation of space during matsuri days). We will also address the issue of the renewed perception and representation of the environment (the built or natural environment, in particular sites that are dangerous or off limits) through aerial kite photography. |
