Description
Summary:The present paper describes the movements of the Karajá of Buridina (Central Brazil) towards two kinds of places, the bush and the city, territories (hãwa) of the jaguars and of the Whites, respectively. These movements involve a dynamics of transformation, a change in the affections, capabilities and bodily dispositions of the Karajá when they walk in the bush and when they go to the city. I argue that places and persons mutually constitute one another, so that places stabilize the perspective of the beings that inhabit it. Being in a place, then, imply establishing a relation with the perspective of the beings to whom that place is a village, or a territory.
