| Summary: | This essay proposes to trace and understand the fundamental process of urbanization of the Three Gauls – it marks the advent of municipal civilization in these areas – by looking at the textual sources in the light of the results of recent urban archaeology. In the interior of Gaul, the basic process gets under way just after the conquest of the Alps (16-7 BC) and in the context of the preparations for the conquest of Germany, very precisely between 15 and 12 BC. It was at that time that Augustus established a senate, magistrates and laws in the civitates of Gallia Comata. Negotiations continued after his departure, especially during the regular meetings organized at the altar of the confluence at Lyon and during the censuses supervised by Drusus in 12 BC, and later by Germanicus in AD 14. The intervention of the Roman state during the crushing of the revolt of 21 and after, must also have played a role in the acceleration of the programmes of urbanization and development of civitas-capitals. |
