| Summary: | This article aims to compare the cinema and audiovisual courses provided by the French education system before and after the Baccalaureat (school-leaving examination). After secondary school, there is a two-year technical and professional course, leading to a ‘BTS audiovisual’ (technical certificate in audiovisual studies). At secondary level, ‘artistic education’ and ‘cinema and audiovisual’ are available as optional and examinable courses. This article considers the differences between these two types of training and their outcomes. It does not deal with the courses offered by post-Bac universities, instead concentrating on the paradigms informing the ’cinema and audiovisual’ options offered in secondary schools pre- and post-Bac. The question is how is ‘cinema and audiovisual education’ presented in the national education system leading to certification (Baccalaureate, BTS) ? Is there an homogeneous vision of the objects studied (film, cinema, audiovisual) ? If not, why not, and what are the consequences for the students and the ways these courses are received ? |
