Description
Summary:The geographical framework of Bucharest during the Phanariot period (1716–1821). The paper aims to reconstruct the geographical framework of Bucharest during the so called Phanariot period (1716–1821) on the basis of contemporary written sources, mainly testimonials of foreign travelers and chronicles. We have paid equal attention to the land relief, the rich hydrographic network (rivers, streams, sources, lakes, swamps etc.), the climate and the vegetation (including vegetable gardens, orchards and vineyards), permanently taking into account the implications (both beneficial and deleterious) of the geographical framework for the life of the inhabitants. At the same time, we have been concerned to point out the differences between the eighteenth century’s and present day geographic data of Bucharest.
