Summary: | Foundation: yoga is recognized as a form of medicine that integrates the physical, mental and spiritual components of an individual to improve aspects of health, particularly stress-related illnesses. Evidence shows that stress contributes to the etiology of heart disease, cancer and stroke.
Objective: to evaluate the effects of yoga as a therapy in reducing stress in patients with high blood pressure.
Method: a quasi-experimental, before-after study without a control group was carried out in 138 patients with arterial hypertension who attended a private clinic in Ambato, Ecuador. The sample was selected through non-probabilistic, intentional sampling with inclusion and exclusion criteria. The intervention consisted of a yoga program for 8 weeks and the application of the Perceived Stress Scale before and after the program.
Results: the mean age was 41.2 years, with 50.7 % male (n = 70) and 49.3 % female (n = 68) participants. The stress variable measured before the intervention had a mean of 19.44, and the measurement after the intervention had a mean of 15.94, showing a lower average stress level after the intervention. The Wilcoxon test resulted in a value = -9.770 (p < 0.05). 90.6 % of the subjects decreased their stress level with the intervention.
Conclusions: yoga therapy showed positive results in reducing stress in patients with high blood pressure. Yoga should be considered as an effective complementary therapy to relieve stress in patients with high blood pressure, with potential to improve the quality of life of patients |
