description | Sociological research on interest groups has thoroughly investigated the domain of “quiet politics,” where corporations act through some discrete means of political action. There is much less work on the ways in which business groups mobilize the mass public on their behalf. I work on this subject through the lens of a classical case study of public problems dealing with traffic accidents in the United States. The study is based on a large amount of archival material and more than eighty interviews. It reveals significant nuances in the ways in which auto manufacturers and large insurers have mobilized the mass public over an eighty-year period. Some put the emphasis on scientific evidence to insist on vehicle safety, while others refer to moral arguments related to drivers’ behaviour. This result sheds light on the development of a political market for public problems. |
