| Summary: | Knowledge on major nuclear accidents is an important issue for the nuclear industry, which has been trying for more than 60 years to develop while avoiding major accidents. However, although this field has been the subject of many developments, many areas of uncertainty remain. This article shows how these uncertainties, by being rooted in the materiality of nuclear technology, constitute a particular form of ignorance. It is explained both by the complexity of the technology, which has increased over time, and by the increase in reactor power. It is also due to the complexity of the physical phenomena at work during the accident, which makes its study very complex and its by-product, the elusive “corium”. |
