Summary: | Recently rediscovered and omnipresent in specialist galleries, design from the 1980s was also mass-produced. Philippe Starck’s collaboration with the mail-order company Les 3 Suisses is an example of the wish to make design available to everyone, and writing a biography of an object from this production allows us to explore different paths linked to its design and initial destination. Since its creation, Starck’s Ray Hollis ashtray has had several simultaneous uses, all the while reflecting the times in which it was created. The aim is to study the history of an ashtray reproduced in thousands of copies of a catalogue, and which, from the moment of its creation and even more so today, has become a heritage object. For this study, we have chosen to focus on the object itself, rather than on a particular copy, as a biography would traditionally require. |
