Summary: | A research programme undertaken at Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges/Lugdunum of the Convenae uncovered the very levelled remains of a large mausoleum facing the town. The exploration of the surroundings of the monument showed that the building was not part of a cemetery built along an access road to the urban zone, but that it was installed in the centre of a vast esplanade delimited by a large enclosure wall, which could be linked to a residence built in the immediate periphery of the ancient city. Based on the comparable example of funerary monuments of the suburbium of Rome, the Herrane mausoleum can be identified with a monumentum erected in a hortus, which commemorates the memory of a great figure from Lugdunum, probably in the 2nd c. AD. |
