Description
Summary:La Novela Española was an editorial project of popular antifascist literature published in Toulouse between 1947 and 1948. This article analyzes this collection of brief literary texts from a double point of view: the cultural history of book publishing and the culture of the Spanish republican exile. It is shown that the collections continued a publishing practice in early 20th century Spain, the novel collection under subscription, to which peculiarities of the republican culture of exile are added. The paper analyzes the catalog of the collection, which includes classical works which were significant for the identity of the republican community and some novels from popular collections from the beginning of the century. However, in the unpublished texts incorporated into the catalog, the republican and anti-Franco political cause is noticeable, as well as melodramatic plots and costumbrist descriptions that must have met the demand of the exile public in the South of France.
