description We review the literature to highlight criteria for analysing public participation GIS (PPGIS). The theories that have been used, developed or sketched out about PPGIS address the issue according to various entry points: communication and collective learning, negotiation and mediation, representations and cognitive processes, exclusion and politics of knowledge.
