Description
Summary:The purpose of the study. The aim of the article is, basing on the analysis of archival and bibliographic sources, to analyze the outstanding Ukrainian artcritic, collector and bibliophile Vasyl Oleksandrovych Shchavynskyi’ research of Shevchenko. The methodology. The methodology of work is based on the use of source, archival, chronological, comparative, biographical and prosopographic research methods. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the work is in the fact that, for the first time, based on the analysis of archival documents and bibliographic sources, the activities of V. Shchavynskyi in collecting and researching the literary and artistic heritage of T. Shevchenko, are comprehensively reflected. Conclusions. The article concludes that the archives of Ukrainian scientific institutions contain documents, and their analysis allows to reconstruct the content of V. Shchavynskyi’s scientific library, a significant part of whichis publications devoted to T. Shevchenko. Having a great interest in the literary and painting heritage of T. Shevchenko, V. Shchavinskyi collected rare editions of Kobzar and scientifically valuable works about him, which after the scholar’s death entered the book collections of Ukraine. The art critic managed to find and introduce into scientific and socio-cultural circulation the portrait of T. Shevchenko, which attracts people with a high level of performance and a perfectly reproduced image of the outstanding Ukrainian artist. On the basis of the acquired bibliographic and artistic sources, V. Shchavynskyi prepared a number of research works revealing T. Shevchenko’ educational and artistic activities, thereby making a notable contribution to national Shevchenko studies. The publication of Shevchenko’s self-portrait in 1859 in the magazine Ukraine became the impetus for a discussion on the portrait attribution, which is not concluded even now. Within the framework of this discussion, scientific works were published that expanded knowledge about T. Shevchenko’ life and work.
