| description | This article demonstrates the sociocultural valence of Flaubert’s style by analyzing in detail a descriptive landscape. The first part underlines the contribution of Jean-Pierre Richard toward study of the visual in Flaubert generally, while acknowledging the gap still present between stylistic analysis and historical or sociocultural criticism. The second part aims to bridge this gap through a close reading of the description of the Orne valley in Bouvard and Pécuchet, which Richard previously analyzed from another perspective. Attention to the stylistic subtleties now reveals a contrast of ancient and modern that forces reflection on that era’s agricultural modernization and on the relationship of humans to nature. This consideration of literary landscapes then leads to a comparison with nineteenth century French landscape painters in the final part of the article, where Charles Blanc’s comments on prosaic subjects and on style’s connection to the ideal animate our abstract comparison. |
