The paradox is the fact that far from being an innovative statement of principles, the manifesto disappointingly reads like a re-writing of some of John Ruskin’s best-known passages. The redeeming feature is the seminal role played by the text. It informs the whole of the literature produced by the Society, whether in the form of reprints and translations of the manifesto itself or booklets on certain themes derived from it. The text thus acquires a lasting value as a guideline to and a reflection of the Society’s work through the years. |
