description Cantonment fishing is a French legal and administrative tool used to manage fisheries resources and the regulation of fishing on marine site defined. This tool was developed in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) in 1999, at the request of fishermen facing depletion of fish stocks in the coastal strip. The competent authorities on the marine environment have installed this device on eight areas spread around the island (the Atlantic coast to the Caribbean coast). Cantonment fishing is little scientifically documented to date, apart from fishery surveys conducted by scientists-biologists. It is therefore appropriate to retrace the steps of the development of this tool and analyze the first results and challenges.
