description | Historical graphic memoir is a new comic book genre that emerged after the publication of Art Spiegelman's Maus at the turn of the 1990s. In this revolutionary album, the author recounts in a zoomorphic representation the life of his parents, Polish Jews facing the Holocaust and deportation. Following Spiegelman, other authors also produced stories with a clear desire to share and preserve a family and/or personal memory, by documenting their albums very carefully and following an approach close to oral history. Antonio Altarriba tells the story of his father's life in The Art of Flying [2009] and his mother's in The Broken Wing [2016]. To do so, he uses family sources as well as his father's oral testimony and uses photography to attest to the truthfulness of his statements, practices characteristic of authors of historical graphic memoirs. However, the use of fiction in passages raises questions as to whether these two albums belong to the genre. |
