| description | Clearcutting has recently received a great deal of media coverage in France. This article focuses on the Morvan region, where the protests are particularly strong, to understand the transformations in forest cover that are actually taking place and the social forces behind them. Data on land use, forest species and land ownership were combined in a sample of 12 communes. The vast majority of clearcuts are small, in contrast to the (larger) surface area thresholds used by the authorities to control them. The increase in the number of clearcuts and the surface areas concerned is largely due to the spruce bark beetle epidemic, while the other clearcuts are conversions of hardwood stands and harvests of economically mature softwood stands. These three factors play a role in varying proportions, depending on the profile of the owners (institutional investors, French public authorities, forest operators, non-trading landholding companies). |
