description This article examines in detail the concept of regional specialization, conducts a study of key concepts on this topic and analyzes the sectoral specialization of the regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan over the past five years. The calculation of the specialization coefficient using the gross regional product data was chosen as a method for determining the specialization of the country's regions. The structure of wholesale trade turnover in the regions was also analyzed in order to confirm the hypothesis that the composition of regional trade volumes is predominantly influenced by goods produced in the sectors wherein the respective regions have established a specialization. Calculations showed that the main sectors of the national economy with the largest share in the GRP structure are: wholesale and retail trade; car and motorcycle repair; mining and quarrying; manufacturing; real estate transactions; transportation and warehousing. Most of the regions of the republic specialize in agricultural and industrial sectors. It was also found that the regions with the most diversified economies were the city of Astana and the Almaty region. The most specialized regions included the Karaganda and West Kazakhstan regions. Despite the wide range of products supplied, the structure of wholesale trade turnover in most regions corresponds to their specialization.
